Peñón de los Enamorados

It is an enclave that rises imposingly among the landscapes of the valley. Nestled halfway from the city of dolmens and Archidona, this enigmatic mountain with “human form” is wrapped by a unique halo of romanticism. If you are planning to spend a few days on the Costa del Sol, do not miss a visit to the Peña de los Enamorados de Antequera.
According to popular tradition, a young Christian was captured in the domains of Granada during medieval times and sent to serve in the house of a rich Moorish family. There he fell in love with the daughter, who reciprocated with her love. Forced to keep their idyll a secret, the lovers could only see each other in secret, until one day, tired of hiding their feelings, they fled. But her father was not going to allow such an affront and, accompanied by his entourage, pursued the couple until he cornered them in the place known today as the Peña de los Enamorados. That mountain, more than a refuge, would end up becoming the scene of their last test of love. When they were surprised and to avoid giving themselves away, the young men preferred to put an end to their lives. In a desperate attempt to remain together forever, they threw themselves into each other’s arms from the top of the rock.
The Peña de los Enamorados is not only famous for the legend to which it owes its name. It is also famous for its curious profile, which resembles the face of a recumbent man. There are even those who believe that the figure resembles the head of an Indian looking at the sky.
Although this whim of nature dominates much of the landscape of Antequera, an ideal place to contemplate it is the Moorish citadel of the city. Walking along the Paseo de las Barbacanas, having your picture taken next to the Arco de los Gigantes (Arch of the Giants) and going up to the Mirador de las Almenillas are some of the options for a perfect visit.
