El Torcal de Antequera

El Torcal de Antequera is a natural site of 1171 ha (11.7 km²) located in the municipality of Antequera, in the province of Malaga (Andalusia, Spain). It is known for the whimsical shapes that the various erosive agents have been modeling in its limestone rocks, constituting an outstanding example of karst landscape.
In 1929 the area was recognized as the first “Andalusian Protected Natural Area” of National interest. In 1978 it was declared “Natural Reserve Park” and “Natural Site” in 1989. In 2014 it was declared a Special Area of Conservation. The sierra also enjoys the declaration of Special Protection Area for Birds, issued by the Ministry of Environment and Territorial Planning of the Junta de Andalucía.
In 2013 El Torcal de Antequera was chosen as the second finalist of El Mejor Rincón 2013 of Guía Repsol. In addition, El Torcal is proposed as a “Spanish Geological Site of International Relevance” (Global Geosite) by the Geological and Mining Institute of Spain for its geomorphological interest, with the denomination “SK002: El Torcal de Antequera”, within the geological context “Karstic systems in carbonates and evaporites of the Iberian Peninsula and Balearic Islands”.
In 2016 it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO as part of the serial cultural property called Antequera Dolmens Site, as the tholos of El Romeral is oriented towards its summit.
